National Affordable Housing Forum: Achieving a New National Affordable Housing Agreement

24-25 July 2006, Old Parliament House, Canberra

The main purpose of the Forum was to stimulate informal discussion about principal goals and priorities for a National Affordable Housing Agreement, possible key elements of such an Agreement, and ways of building public and political support for it.

Hosted by ACOSS, ACTU, Housing Industry Association and National Housing Alliance*, the Forum brought together 60 invited participants from the housing, development and finance sectors, as well as from unions, community groups, local councils and academic experts.

A National Affordable Housing Agreement would involve the Commonwealth, State and local governments and was first proposed in the communiqué issued after a National Summit on Housing Affordability in 2004.

*The National Housing Alliance includes the Community Housing Federation of Australia; Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union; National Shelter and the Urban Development Institute of Australia , as well as ACOSS and HIA.

The National Housing Affordability Summit was convened to lift the debate about the barriers and solutions to housing affordability.

Co hosted by HIA, ACOSS, ACTU and ALGA, in association with the National Housing Alliance, the Summit was attended by leading industry, academic, financial and social service providers.

After the Summit , the non-government co-hosts issued a joint communiqué and made a presentation to the first joint meeting of Ministers for Housing, Planning and Local Government Ministers in August 2005.
